10 Major Real Estate Projects Reshaping DC’s Landscape

Despite uncertainty around the federal government and elevated costs, building of all kinds is continuing across the District. There are numerous big projects on the boards—in various stages of planning and development—that are worth your attention.

Among these projects is the long-planned redevelopment of the DC Correctional Treatment Facility Annex. The planned redevelopment would replace much of the existing 50-year-old Central Detention Facility at 1901 D St. SE.

Intended to look like anything but a jail, the design by CORE architecture + design and CGL Cos., a justice facilities planning firm, aimed to promote “rehabilitation and reintegration, rather than merely detention,” DOC Director Thomas Faust said last year.

The Office of the District of Columbia Auditor and the nonprofit Council for Court Excellence released a report calling the need for a new facility “urgent.” The study found the rate of death in custody in the Central Detention Facility and Correctional Treatment Facility during a one-year audit period was more than 3.5 times the national average.
